For Researchers: SMA research grants

APPLYING FOR AN SMA RESEARCH GRANT

Applications for SMA research grants are considered in accordance with our Research Strategy. Our application process involves a rigorous peer review so that only the best research is funded.

For more information on how to apply, please read our Procedures for grant applications. Before applying, please review our Research Strategy.

We also fund research projects through our membership of SMA Europe, which holds one grant round per year, typically opened at the end of July. SMA Europe’s Call for Research Proposals 2016 is now open. Find out how to apply for an SMA Europe research grant.

THE GRANT FUNDING PROCESS

We review applications for research funding as they come in. The application is a detailed description of the project and its costs, as well as any ethical considerations, such as the use of animals or human samples. It also includes a brief description in lay terms. Please click on the link for a grant application form and send back to Vanessa Christie-Brown,  our Research Co-ordinator, at vanessa@smatrust.org

The applications are peer reviewed by a group of international experts, our Scientific and Clinical Advisory Group (SCAG). After consideration, the SCAG makes a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on whether the projects should be funded. The process can take approximately 3 months.

For more information, please contact Vanessa Christie-Brown,  our Research Co-ordinator, at vanessa@smatrust.org or phone on +44(0)1789 801155.

STATEMENTS & POLICIES

  • The SMA Trust supports the AMRC position statement on the use of animals in research. The statement sets out our support for research using animals where there is no alternative and where there is a clear link between the research and advancing the understanding of disease, preventing disease or developing potential treatments.
